Best Coldwater Bait

Postby Crazy BASStard on Mon Dec 07, 2009 1:52 am

When it comes to late fall/ early winter fishing up here in Massachusetts, one lure has always produced at least some hits no matter how slow the bite is, the YUM Wooly Hawgtail, I fishing it with a weighted shank texas rigging hook, bomb it out as deep as possible, let it flutter down and crrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllllllll it along the bottom.

The other day while I was fishing with Lucky I only had one of these left (black/blue) so I rigged it up as I described above and casted it out, it was like magic, I caught two decent bass on the first two casts. Unfortunately it was my last one and was weakened due to previous use so the tail broke off a couple casts later. I will definitely be picking up a couple packs of these before I hit the water again.

For me it's always the suspending jerkbait often with 20-30 second pauses, if that doesn't produce I'll crawl a jig on the bottom with a bulky trailer.

Cold water is tough. You should usually use Jigs.
Feel how easily the bait moves? That's a rock.
Feel it pull? You're taking it through vegetation.
Feel it grow light? Your on a brush pile.
Feel it explode and almost jerk the rod from your hand?
Thats a bass.
